Regulatory compliance as a quality attribute for conversational agentic systems

Conversational agentic systems rely on dynamic, multi-turn interactions and often orchestrate external data sources or pre-trained models to accomplish complex tasks. During this interaction, the replies provided to the user need to be accurate and not contain, for instance, sensitive data that come from external sources. Consequently, system reliability depends not only on conversational accuracy, but also on regulatory integrity. In this talk, I will first discuss the critical intersection of software quality and regulatory compliance—highlighting key frameworks such as GDPR, CCPA, and the risk-based obligations of the EU AI Act. I will present software engineering works that focus on this aspect. I will then focus on AI models and datasets descriptiosn and present an analysis of regulatory compliance readiness across widely used open-source dataset descriptions, evaluating their completeness and data governance indicators. Finally, I will frame regulatory readiness as a essential quality attribute for the lifecycle of trustworthy conversational agentic systems.
